The weekends have always been a bit of an awkward time for me. Sometimes I have no idea what to do with myself, which is weird, I know, except that I’m not the only one. Really! I’m not the only person who loves the idea of vacations, but, to be honest, gets kind of antsy on about day three. Seriously, Google “antsy vacation” and you’ll find some hilarious proof that, while really, really strange, there are people in the world who like to work and/or be at work. Call it a weird attachment to routine. Call it being wholly uncreative with your free time. Whatever! I know!
This whole time-off strangeness has been heightened by the fact that Pat is now working every weekend, so the only time we get to spend time together is in the middle of the week when I need to be writing, making calls, reporting, researching, developing long-overdue websites or story queries, meeting with contacts or planning to do the aforementioned items. Inevitably, I get dragged off on some sort of wily-nily errand trip (or to the movies and to dinner, let’s just be honest), and the day is shot.
So it’s Friday and uh-oh! Here’s another one! Quoting the immortal words of Marlys, “Dag!”
But, the fact is that I’ll be neck deep in writing projects this weekend, friends. Day One: profile of a conservation biologist. Day Two: longer profile (that I should have written weeks ago) on the first woman to run the CIA’s spy services. Hopefully I’ll get in some hanging’ time (is that what all the kids call it these days?).
So send me your weekend ideas. (This isn’t an original request, I know. You can go here and vote on what this girl — who apparently has/had my same problem — should have done on some weekend in 2005.) Bonus love for that are a bit deeper than “spend time with friends” or “spend time with family” or “get caught up on chores” or “go see XYZ band or art show” because, really, I KNOW ABOUT ALL OF THAT. THAT, I CAN FIND ON MY OWN.
This, my friends, is more of an existential question, and that you can blame on my minor in philosophy, because “Ponder the best usage of your time and, thus, your purpose in life” is exactly NOT what’s on all those “What to Do This Weekend” lists that are as common as sand fleas and just about as useful. Dig deep!
